His name was Carl Oliver and he had joined the army at the age of twenty two. He was trained as a sniper and included in the special forces department because he was good at his job. He was sent to missions that had become almost impossible for the other departments to accomplish, especially where a sniper was necessary. He had a partner named Lewis Valentine.

While it was Carl’s job to do the shooting, it was Lewis’s own to watch through the binoculars and monitor the required distances. Carl had broken an impossible record. It happened in Afghanistan during their mission to a terrorist outpost in one the country’s deserts. Because they could only find a small hiding spot, it was important that Carl didn’t miss his first shot.

If he should miss, their position would be exposed and they could start receiving assaults. Therefore, private Lewis measured the distance to an impossible sum of four thousand kilometers and Carl shocked his country by delivering two shots on targets. It was on this day, following this achievement that he received the title King of Guns. But they had miscalculated.

While they’d been convinced the enemies were situated at a single location, it turned out there were more. Therefore, as Carl and Lewis started to celebrate the mission accomplished, Lewis would receive a bullet to the head and died instantly. Carl’s heart was broken, this was his partner since training school and they were just discussing his plans for retirement as this was his last mission.

News traveled very fast, especially if it was bad news. Before Carl Oliver could reach the remote countryside of Montana, the news about his achievements had preceded him. But while everybody knew the title King of Guns, nobody knew the face that bore it. He’d worked for about a year at the shooting range ranch, where he cleaned the guns and performed handyman duties.

While they didn’t know the name of the handsome man who’d been living in one of the abandoned rooms at the Valentine ranch, everybody knew he was the handyman. Lewis Valentine had a very pretty daughter who had just come out of a marriage with her only daughter. And the first trouble was sighted as her exhusband arrived to demand some money forcefully.

Carl had been fixing stuff within the canopy that housed the different guns Jane Valentine (Lewis’s daughter) used for her business, when they saw a half dressed man aiming randomly at the shooting range. Jane would identify him as her exhusband and after the initial greeting, which was mostly unpleasant, he demanded the sum of 20 thousand dollars to pay off a debt.

He had a gambling problem, the same one that had ruined his marriage and rendered him homeless in Montana, and had waited for months for the mysterious new comer staying with his exwife to disappear without success. He was now running out of patience and had decided to come looking for trouble. But Carl defeated him in a gun battle and rescued Jane and her child.

Both Carl, Jane and her daughter were trying to recover from the struggle they’d just experienced while dealing with her exhusband, when more trouble arose. This time around, the members of her gunslingers team had arrived for rehearsals. They were preparing for the annual gunslingers competition and really hoped to win. While they were not the best, they were good.

So good that they continued to laugh at the handyman for even slightly touching a gun. Even after he proved he could shoot better than the best man on the team, they found other ways to mock him. This was until Matthew Valentine’s arrival. He’d come with the best gunslingers in the state to fight over the ownership of the ranch on which his late brother built his shooting range.

A soldier’s brother

Because joining the army demarcated a man from their friends and family, a soldier’s brother became the next solder by their side. This was why after Lewis Valentine’s sudden demise, Carl Oliver had to make sure his remains were returned and properly buried in America. It was also the reason why he felt the loss very deeply.

It had broken his heart that while the country remembered his achievements and prepared to hand him a medal of honor, nobody remembered his partner who’d died during the mission. He’d therefore, promised by his grave side to never lift a gun in battle again, to abandon the army, to retire to Montana and take care of his children.

The Greedy uncle

Lewis Valentine had left his family to join the army at a very tender age of 17. This made it that he didn’t spend enough time with his junior brother who was about 9 at the time. And because of this, the two biological brother’s were estranged. Therefore, Matthew Valentine saw his brother’s death as an opportunity to take over his only legacy.

To achieve this, he would go to the extent of purchasing the bank through which his late brother purchased the ranch. This made it that he became the owner of the place should his niece fail to complete paying the interest. But he was impatient, because some raw material had been found in the land. He therefore came to challenge his late brother’s children to a fight.

Mission to protect

Carl had made promises by his late partner’s grave side and after abandoning the ceremony where he was supposed to receive a medal of honor from the president of the United States, he would hide his identity and migrate to Montana where he started to work as a handyman under his late friend’s daughter.

But while he continued to fake as an ordinary handyman, his actual mission was to watch over Jane Valentine and her only daughter. Therefore, as trouble started to come calling at the shooting range, Carl continued to stand in the way of everyone who thought they could take over following the demise of Lewis Valentine.
