Part 1: Before the Inevitable Chaos—What Season 2 of Squid Game Sets Up for the Season 3

Before we take the full spotlight on Squid Game Season 3, let’s turn back the time, and reminisce what we left off in Season 2. From the Front Man’s reveal, to Gi-hun’s determination to survive, and the decisions made by all the opt-outs, everything plays a big, significant role.

How Season 2 Left Us Hanging

In the final episode of Season 2, Gi-hun and the entire gang of ‘opt-outs’ stormed outside the sleeping quarters to take matters into their own hands. Armed with the sheer will to survive, they clashed into the soldiers, firing the guns with newfound determination, and restored hope.

They managed to outnumber the soldiers, and little by little, they advanced to the top of the moving stairs. It all seems going well according to plan but as they returns for another set of ammunition, the Front Man (acting as player 001) fakes his own death.

He then used the uprising to challenge Gi-hun. He steps in, bringing in a massive group of new soldiers at his back. He purposefully confronts Gi-hun who’s accompanied by Jung-bae (player 390) and shoots Jung-bae point-blank as a way to punish Gi-hun, and break his sanity.

Jung-bae’s death completely overturns the favor against them, signaling that the nightmares are far from over.

The Continuation of Bloodbath — The Turning Point for Gi-hun

Jung-bae’s dead. Hyun-ju (player 120) has run out of ammo. Opt-outers fall one by one as the soldiers fire bullets into their bodies. Gi-hun’s unconscious, and the Front Man successfully seized the rebellion before it reaches the upper floor.

Everything is in order once more, and the willing participants watches in silence as the remaining opt-outers return to the room. The bitter taste of defeat hangs in the air, and Gi-hun didn’t expect they’ll let him live.

Drowning in intense grief, and self-blame, he demands an explanation. He breaks into a fit of anger, and confusion, and immediately gets dragged away after causing so much scene.

The self-loathing slowly poisons his mind. But a confession from Geum-ja (player 149) steers his attention away from himself, directing to Dae-ho (player 388) who turns out to be the reason the ammunition never came. Something awakens inside Gi-hun and his once clean, and innocent morality begins to dim.

Will Gi-hun let his rage, and irrationality drown his principles, and commit something that the Front Man has been waiting for?

The unforgettable trio—Hyun-ju, Geum-ja, and Jun-hee, however, didn’t allow the game sweep their hope. They team up to find the exit and escape before time runs out.

Hyun-ju tries her best to protect the two women, taking the killing as her responsibility. But as just as she gleefully informs them about the exit, Myung-gi stabs her in the back, leaving Geum-ja and Jun-hee frozen in spot.

The brutality doesn’t end there, though. As Hyun-ju’s death echoes through the playground, Yong-sik falls on the ground, too, after being unwillingly stabbed by Guem-ja, his mother.

Deaths multiplies as the game approaches its conclusion. Gi-hun and Dae-ho’s confrontation stands as the ultimate climax and they didn’t fail to fulfill our expectation. They both attempt to justify their own actions, avoiding accountability, and shifting the blame.

Dae-ho then reveals the reason for his betrayal, and Gi-hun releases his pent-up frustration and chokes him, only wanting to project his mistake. But before he can stop himself, Dae-ho stops struggling, and the light in his eyes gradually dims.

What’s even worse, the games didn’t spare Geum-ja and Jun-hee, as well. After Yong-sik’s death, Geum-ja unfortunately hangs herself out of guilt, sending Jun-hee in hopelessness, and knocking up Gi-hun’s senses.

Gi-hun then propels back to his old self. He swears to protect Jun-hee and her baby, and promises they’ll make it out of alive. Despite Gi-hun’s attempts to save her, Jun-hee’s sprained ankle becomes her fatal liability that results to her unexpected decision in the next game.

With tears shrouding her feared face, Jun-hee steps into the thin air, falling straight into her death.

Who Survives, and How They Did It

As more money fills the large piggy bank, the ones remaining looks up with anticipation as the number rises. The price of each player’s death earn celebratory smirks from the survivors. Except Gi-hun who cradles the innocent baby.

His survival from the previous game stems from his determination and Jun-hee’s sacrifice. The other players, however, survives either because of their selfishness or extreme greediness.

Particularly, Myung-gi who still refuses to even acknowledge Jun-hee’s baby as his own. He calculates his next move, and he knows that exposing himself as the father will make him liability.

That proves to be right as the game coordinator unexpectedly announces that the baby will take Jun-hee’s place. It means there’s a new player, and she will earn a cut from the money they’ll take home if they ever try to opt-out.

Will Gi-hu’s will to protect the baby until his death be enough or will he need to sacrifice, too?

As the VIP’s and the Front Man watches him pick up the baby and gently places her on the floor, Gi-hun makes a daring decision. It’s the final act that truly testifies the core of his character, and depicts the reality that he failed to alter.

His sacrifice marks the end of a journey filled with bloodshed, moral corruption, and betrayal you won’t really see coming. It’s the path that reveals the darkest side of humanity. The players were never meant to win.  It has always been the people behind the organization, the eyes who watch, the voices that laugh, and the hands that control.

Gi-hun failed to changed the oppressive marks of capitalism and the system that exploits, and executes the freewill of humans. But his morally complex character successfully changed the trajectory of innocent lives. Specifically, the baby who earns the pricless life free from bloodshed and trauma.

Will There Be a Season 4? Here’s What the Ending Teased
